Previous Entry Share Next Entry

The main MAPO stores were in the ground levels of these Enver-era skyscrapers. MAPO was the state-owned chain of shops during the Communist years. It was an acronym for Magazin Popullore (People's Store). If anyone has close-up photos or interior views of these MAPO stores, please email me at alphistia@yahoo.com. Falemniderit.

I find them mostly in old copies of the magazine Shqiperia e Re (New Albania) from the communist years, and in photo albums that were published around the anniversary of the liberation of Albania, so in 1984, 1979, 1969. I bought some on ebay, some on boofinder.com, and some from vendors in Tirana and Kruja during trips in 2005 and 2006. There will be more photos as time passes - I have a very large number of materials :-)

In Bulgaria we had NarMag (НарМаг), which was an acronym for Naroden Magazin that also means People's Store. Nice picture ;)
